Inside: A Sea-Swept Summer Wedding On The Devon Coast
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

From meeting through a mutual friend to a Paris proposal, step inside Georgia Carrick and Henry Philipps’ sea-swept summer wedding on the Devon coast.

With a family home overlooking the water, an antique Victorian tiara and a marquee pitched above the sea, this was a gloriously personal celebration on the South Devon coast. Nearly 200 guests descended on the tiny waterside village of Noss Mayo for a sun-soaked weekend that began with a church ceremony steeped in family history and ended, two days and several Palomas later, with dancing until 3am. The details felt wonderfully uncontrived: beach stones became place settings, trees from the family wood were cut for the marquee, and the bride arrived in an ethereal bespoke gown beneath an antique lace veil worn by generations of women in her family. Add an extraordinary collection of antique jewels, a Land Rover smothered in flowers and a second-day barbecue accompanied by an England World Cup win, and the result was an English summer wedding with real soul.

The Story So Far

Georgia Carrick and Henry Philipps met through a mutual friend three years before their wedding. Their engagement came in Paris, where Henry proposed on the balcony of their hotel while the couple were playing backgammon.

As an antique jeweller, Georgia had rather strong ideas about the ring. In fact, she had already chosen her Victorian diamond cluster ring and tucked it safely away before Henry proposed. Georgia runs Mayfair antique jewellery boutique Charlotte Sayers Antique Jewellery with her mother, so, as she puts it, Henry “never really had a choice”.

Venue

The couple married in the same church where Georgia’s parents had exchanged their vows, before returning to her family home just outside Noss Mayo for the reception.

“It really should be kept a secret because it’s total magic,” says Georgia of the Devon village. A marquee overlooking the sea welcomed 190 guests for the celebrations, with the glorious coastal setting doing much of the decorating itself.

With the wedding taking place on a Friday, festivities continued into Saturday with a proper Day Two. Guests spent the morning on the beach before returning for a barbecue by Smoking Embers. Henry had organised a projector and Starlink so everyone could watch England play Norway in the World Cup. An England win set the mood rather perfectly, and dancing continued until 3am.

Fashion

After trying on countless dresses in London and finding that nothing quite spoke to her, Georgia discovered Devon-based dressmaker Ailsa Munro.

“I fell in love with her style,” she says. Together, they created an ethereal bespoke gown that felt completely different from anything Georgia had previously tried. Rather than consigning it to a box after one wear, the pair are planning to meet again to dye and alter the dress so Georgia can wear it for future occasions.

Her veil carried even more history. The antique Victorian lace veil is the family veil, previously worn by Georgia’s mother, her mother’s cousin and her second cousin’s wife. Georgia became its latest custodian on her wedding day, with her sister next in line to wear it for her own wedding in September.

Jewellery

Running an antique jewellery business with her mother meant Georgia had access to a rather extraordinary jewellery box for the day.

Every piece came from Charlotte Sayers Antique Jewellery, beginning with a Victorian old mine-cut diamond tiara dating from around 1840–1860, which can also be worn as a necklace.

She paired it with two Art Deco pieces: a French diamond bracelet set with 9.40 carats of old European-cut diamonds and an Art Deco sapphire and diamond cluster ring.

Georgia had initially decided against a necklace, worried that one more jewel might be a step too far, until the boutique acquired an Edwardian diamond négligée pendant. Against the neckline of her dress, it was exactly right.

Her sisters were also dressed in Charlotte Sayers jewels for the day. “We truly are very lucky to play dress-up in some remarkable jewels with such incredible history and beauty,” says Georgia.

The bridal party

Georgia’s sisters acted as her maids of honour, with no traditional bridesmaid line-up. The youngest members of the wedding party were a handful of tiny flower girls and a page boy, all still too little to walk down the aisle themselves.

They wore sweet sailor-style outfits from Next and were carried down the aisle by their parents.

Transportation

For the newlyweds’ getaway car, Georgia and Henry kept things brilliantly personal, leaving in the back of her father’s Land Rover.

Florists H Watts Florist transformed it with an exuberant floral installation, turning the family 4×4 into one of the most memorable details of the day.

Tablescape

The tablescape took its cues from the couple’s coastal surroundings. Stones collected from the beach were handwritten with chalk markers and used as place names, while H Watts filled delicate bud vases with flowers.

Elsewhere, the family home itself became part of the decoration. Georgia’s father and Henry headed into the wood on the property the night before the wedding to cut trees, which were then used around the marquee poles. The result felt beautifully connected to the landscape rather than overly styled.

Food & Drink

Milkshed Catering took care of the wedding breakfast and canapés, while Henry’s father supplied the wine and Champagne.

Cocktails came courtesy of Copperwood Events, with Palomas, Moscow Mules and Gin Fizzes flowing throughout the evening.

For Saturday’s second-day celebrations, Smoking Embers took over with a relaxed barbecue, perfectly suited to a hot afternoon by the sea.

Entertainment

Not everything went exactly according to plan, which, in this case, made things all the better.

A slight mix-up meant the couple’s intended first-dance track, Alright by Supergrass, was accidentally played as they entered the marquee. “I was running on such adrenaline that I didn’t even notice,” Georgia remembers.

Rather than worry, they simply switched the original entrance song to become their first dance. Having found no time to rehearse beforehand, Georgia admits they would have been winging it either way.

The Fabulous Hurricanes had the entire wedding on its feet before DJ Will Weaver took over. The dance floor remained packed for the rest of the night.

Beauty & wellness

Grace Brewster looked after Georgia’s hair and make-up on the wedding morning, while her pre-wedding colour was entrusted to Carlos at Vita Hair in London.

Rather than an elaborate pre-wedding regime, the focus was on feeling recognisably herself, with soft hair and make-up to complement the romanticism of the dress and antique jewellery.

Favourite wedding gift

For Georgia, the greatest gift wasn’t something that arrived from a wedding list.

“The best wedding gift was all our friends and family travelling to the depths of Devon to celebrate with us,” she says. “It was a weekend I will never forget and will always cherish.”

Honeymoon

Henry kept their minimoon destination a complete surprise, whisking Georgia away to Petunia Ibiza, a Beaumier Hotel for five nights of complete switch-off after the wedding.

Another friend’s wedding brought them back to reality rather sooner than they might have wished, but a bigger adventure is already being planned, with Vietnam next on the newlyweds’ list.

Advice

Get ahead. Try to get as much sorted as possible early on, rather than leaving everything until the final few weeks.

Disappear together for five minutes. On the advice of a friend, Georgia and Henry slipped away from the celebrations for a moment alone to take everything in. It became one of their most special memories of the day.

Remember whose wedding it is. “It’s your day. Do what you want, how you want to do it.”

With thanks
