In the pantheon of nineties royalty, few reigned quite like Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn Bessette and political scion John F Kennedy Jr. On September 21 1996, they executed the coup of the decade: 40 guests were discreetly instructed to pack and present themselves for a private flight, destination undisclosed. Only upon landing on Cumberland Island, a scrubby slip off Georgia’s Atlantic coast, did they find out they were there for a wedding.
The subterfuge worked. The couple married out of sight, in the First African Baptist Church – a modest, whitewashed chapel with just eight wooden pews and no electricity, their vows exchanged by torchlight. In the three decades since, the day’s particulars have become folklore: Guests had to present a rare coin to be permitted entry; Bessette arrived two hours late after her Narciso Rodriguez slip dress required last-minute resewing by friend and designer Gordon Henderson; and one of the island’s wild horses reportedly chewed on her lily-of-the-valley bouquet.
As Ryan Murphy’s new drama Love Story: John F Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette revisits the couple’s legend, we dive into the details of the couple’s secret wedding.
The Ceremony

As fan Instagram account @allforcarolyn reports: the bride wore a pearlescent silk crepe bias cut gown, with a tulle veil, silk gloves and beaded Manolo Blahnik strappy sandals. Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, fastened by a clip belonging to Jackie Kennedy, styled by George Kyriakos. The groom wore a single-breasted Gordon Henderson wool suit, with a white piqué vest and his father’s wristwatch.

The Reception

At the Greyfield Inn, the island’s only hotel, they hosted a traditional wedding reception: dinner of shrimp, artichokes, grilled swordfish and lemon-raspberry ice cream and a three-tier vanilla butter cream wedding cake. The couple’s first dance was “Forever In My Life” by Prince on the make-shift dance floor.

In a lo-fi video recording of JFK Jr’s reception speech, shared by @allforcarolyn, he says: “Carolyn has changed my life in a way I never thought was possible. She has just made me, tonight, the happiest man alive.”
