The story
Something I find so crazy is just how long we’ve been together now – we’ll be celebrating our 10-year anniversary shortly before our wedding day. Thinking back to when we met, I don’t think little 18-year-old Ellie would ever have imagined that the boy living across the hall from her at university would end up being her future husband, but here we are. We’ve grown so much, as individuals and as a couple, and I love how many years our story has spanned – and how many more we’ve got to look forward to.
Dropping hints
When you’ve been together a long time, talks about your future come so naturally. We’d always discussed what lay ahead and both knew we would love to get married one day. When he booked us a little trip up to the Isle of Skye, I was suspicious, as that’s where my parents got engaged. But let me tell you, that man knows how to throw me off the scent, and the way he talked about the trip made me think it wasn’t even on his radar. How wrong I was!
The proposal
We had a little staycation up on the Isle of Skye, a gorgeous island off the coast of Scotland that we’d both always wanted to visit. After a week of relaxing, exploring and dodging the rain, he popped the question.
The ring
The ring couldn’t be more perfect. I’ve always wanted something simple, elegant and timeless – and the boy delivered. It’s a beautiful oval cut, set on a bridge of diamonds with a platinum band. He very cleverly dipped into my jewellery box to find a ring he knew fit my finger, so that we wouldn’t need any resizing. And I adore that he bought it from Laings, our family jewellers, who always have the most beautiful designs and the most incredible staff.
The celebrations
He had timed the proposal very well, as we had a big family gathering the day after we got home. So we never felt the need for an engagement party – we got to celebrate with our nearest and dearest in such an organic, natural way. I’ll always remember the look on everyone’s faces when we announced it, and the outpouring of love from the people we hold closest.
The outfit
In true Ellie fashion, I was wearing a gorgeous floral dress that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to part with – it’s staying in my wardrobe forever.
Wedding plans so far
We get married this year, and I’m very happy to say the wedding is all planned and done, so now I get to relax until the big day. We’re actually getting married in Edinburgh at Christmas – it’s always been such a special place for both of us, and we wanted to do something a little different, so Christmas felt like the perfect time to tie the knot. There’s always so much magic in the air then, a magic we want to capture on our wedding day and remember for the rest of our lives.
