Inside: A Sparkling Evening of Rare Jewels with Hancocks London
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

There are London addresses that come preloaded with romance. St James’s is one of them. On a crisp Autumn Thursday, guests slipped through the door at Hancocks London at 62 St James’s Street for two glittering hours in a world where diamonds are not simply worn, they are understood. Founded in Mayfair in 1849 and long favoured by royals and collectors, Hancocks London has built its name on rare old-cut stones, antique jewels and a scholar’s eye for provenance, now showcased in its newly renovated St James’s home with its hushed galleries and curated cases of one-of-a-kind pieces.

The guest list read like a cross-section of London style. Laura Coleman and Mercedes Benson comparing settings. Fran Newman-Young and husband Peter drifting between vitrines, eyes trained on the details that matter. Actor Aimée Kelly admiring a feminine cluster ring with her engaged sister. Model Justė gravitating to sleek Art Deco lines. Alize Wilkinson and her husband James discussing cufflinks and dress studs in a way that made everyone suddenly consider a white-tie moment. Then the prima ballerina grace of Yasmine Naghdi, whose presence felt like a love letter to poise itself.

The townhouse itself is a treasure chest of stories, with vitrines lined with rivière necklaces heavy with history, tiaras that once adorned noble heads, and diamonds whose lives span centuries. This is jewellery that feels alive: old European and old mine cuts that catch candlelight with a softer, rounder fire, stones lifted from historic pieces and reset with reverence for their original era. It is this blend of scholarship and artistry that has made Hancocks the discreet destination for royalty, collectors and those seeking heirloom pieces that become part of a family’s own story.

The mood was set from the moment the candles were lit for photographs. At six on the dot, the townhouse began to hum. James Mason worked the rooms with his lens, capturing arrivals as they paused at cabinets to admire eight-carat solitaires and rivière lengths that make a persuasive case for diamonds with denim. Artist Hatty Pedder sketched live portraits of guests with their favourite diamonds drawn delicately onto the page, a contemporary nod to the atelier tradition that felt wonderfully St James’s in spirit.

This was an evening choreographed with finesse. Berry Bros. & Rudd, the grandees of nearby St James’s Street, poured a progression that traced the arc of the night: English sparkling from Hambledon to start, crisp and celebratory; Grand Cru Champagne for the mid-party sparkle; a Burgundian Pouilly-Fuissé that played beautifully with canapé salt and citrus; and a structured St Julien that brought a claret glow to conversations about cut, colour and carat.

In a corner salon, Sacha, lead makeup artist at Code8, was on hand for masterly touch-ups, the sort of discreet complexion polish that allows diamonds to take the spotlight while faces stayed luminous under a thousand iPhone flashes. Addison Ross frames were sent to each guest after the event, holding their favourite portrait from the night alongside a handwritten note, a thoughtful keepsake that suited Hancocks’ townhouse manners perfectly.

What makes a Hancocks evening different is the scholarship in the sparkle. Here, tiaras with that perfect balance of hauteur and charm sit beside vintage Cartier, Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels creations, each piece telling its own story. Upstairs, the Burlington and Bruton galleries invite lingering, which guests happily did, trying on rivière necklaces heavy with history, slipping on bold textured gold that would sing with a minimal silk gown, and imagining the weight of a tiara that has graced more than one royal head. It is a place that encourages discovery rather than display.

There is also the Hancocks London way with people. A family-run house where the managing director still selects stones himself, where diaries from the 1860s record patronage that spans monarchs to modern icons, and where the curation is personal enough that returning clients are quietly shown something they did not know they were looking for. It is this blend of connoisseurship and hospitality that makes evenings like this feel less like an event and more like an initiation into the world of fine jewellery.

By eight, the final glasses were raised, wish lists had lengthened, and portraits had dried. Guests drifted back into St James’s with a last glance at the townhouse façade, a pocketful of recommendations and, in more than a few cases, a mental note to return with a partner to discuss that ring. Diamonds may be forever, but finding the right one is an art. On nights like this, in rooms like these, the art becomes irresistible.
