Inside: A Romantic English Country Wedding At Pylewell Park
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

From a sapphire-studded proposal at a lakeside cabin in Alaska to a romantic English country wedding, step inside Olivia and George’s transatlantic celebration at Pylewell Park – wrapped in soft blues, heartfelt details and effortless charm.

The story so far

I’m from Alaska and George is from London. We met at university in Arizona through a mutual friend – he often came to my dinner parties. Weeks before graduation we began dating and knew we’d make it work. George proposed in Alaska while we lived at my family’s cabin. I love sapphires, my birthstone, and had mentioned a Princess Diana–inspired ring. He found a blue sapphire at a Hampshire jeweler and had my dream ring made bespoke.

Venue

During COVID we lived with George’s parents in Lymington. Our favourite pastime was long countryside drives, often past Pylewell Park. Its enchanting grounds, grand manor house and sea views drew us in every time. When my parents later visited England, we toured Pylewell together and knew instantly it was the one.

We hosted the Friday welcome dinner and Saturday events at Pylewell, with our families and bridal party staying on site. The day after, George’s parents welcomed everyone for a quintessentially English afternoon tea at their Lymington home – a relaxed farewell to the weekend.

Fashion

For the welcome dinner I wore a custom blush-pink jacquard mini dress by Madison Leiren with an oversized bow and matching shoes I covered in the same fabric. For the wedding I chose a Sarah Seven column gown with a square neckline, thick straps and lace sleeves, plus a satin-edged veil and a long bow. “Something blue” threaded the day: my sapphire ring, baby-blue heels, blue bridesmaid dresses and our mothers in blues. For the after-party I changed into my mom’s shortened wedding dress, while George swapped his black tuxedo for a white dinner jacket.

Jewellery

On the morning of the wedding, we exchanged gifts. George gave me sapphire drop earrings to match my ring; I gave him a gold signet ring engraved with his initials. I also wore my late grandmother’s diamond necklace, an aquamarine ring from my mom and a simple tennis bracelet.

Bridal party

My two younger sisters were bridesmaids in matching strapless baby-blue and gold-brocade midi dresses by Mac Duggal; I gifted them silver drop earrings and compact mirrors. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos with monogrammed cufflinks from George. Our flower girl – my goddaughter – wore a white high-neck dress and a silver bracelet to match mine.

Transportation

Most guests stayed at Balmer Lawn Hotel in Brockenhurst, a short drive from Pylewell. We arranged a coach to shuttle everyone, so the celebrations flowed effortlessly.

Tablescape

I envisioned an elegant, layered and romantic tablescape: crisp white linens, creamy florals with earthy greens, tall tapers and custom scarves designed by my sister, tucked into hand-embossed menus tied with French-blue ribbon. Inside the pavilion, Mia Sylvia’s draping turned a blank canvas into something cocooning and intimate. We wrote a handwritten letter to every guest and handed them out at cocktail hour with their table number.

Food & drinks

After the ceremony guests sipped Pimm’s and enjoyed canapés. Dinner was an English-inspired feast of roast chicken, dauphinoise potatoes and garden-pea gnocchi. At sunset we cut a giant pavlova and poured espresso martinis, then later served American-inspired burgers and chips on the dancefloor.

Entertainment

George curated playlists for each moment. Our first kiss landed perfectly on the lyric “kiss me” in Sixpence None the Richer’s song. My childhood best friend sang Landslide for a dance with our parents and If I Ain’t Got You for our first dance. The band, Fully FunKtional, kept the dance floor full all night.

Beauty regime & wellness

I wanted a natural, glowing look, so in the months before I had two laser facials and regular lymphatic drainage massages and protected my skin from the sun. My youngest sister did my wedding make-up, and Colette from CJ Beauty & Co styled a sleek low bun with a center part – clean, classic and timeless.

Favourite Wedding Gifts

We registered for pieces to elevate our dinner parties. Favorites included Spode pasta plates, a chambray-blue Le Creuset Dutch oven and a handmade wooden jewellery box from a friend.

Honeymoon

After the wedding we set off on a “friend-moon” to Puglia, Italy with twenty close friends, staying four days in a fully staffed villa – eating, dancing and continuing the celebration – before George and I continued to Rome for three quiet days of rest and reflection.

Advice

I chose not to have a planner and treated the process as the best party I’d ever plan. My advice: have a clear vision and use mood boards to keep decisions cohesive; take time together – after the ceremony we slipped away with champagne to reflect; finally, prioritise guests’ experience. People remember the atmosphere – the music, laughter and warmth – more than the napkin colour.

With Thanks
