Honeymoon Review: LUX* Grand Gaube

Why go?

Where barefoot beach life meets elevated design. LUX* Grand Gaube offers honeymooners a dreamlike island escape framed by retro-chic interiors and a sense of calm that lingers long after departure.

Honeymoon style

Perfect for couples craving slow mornings, salt air and a touch of design-led luxury. With impeccable dining, island adventures and spa moments, it’s ideal for those seeking a balance between relaxed and refined.

Set the scene

From the moment guests arrive, the mood shifts. Airy, whitewashed interiors by Kelly Hoppen unfold like a breath of fresh sea air – think coastal beach house meets mid-century cool. Light pours into communal spaces, softened by textured neutrals, rattan accents and splashes of marine blue. Bougainvillaea tumbles over pale stone paths as palm trees sway to the rhythm of island time. The vibe is grown-up, but never pretentious – expect stylish honeymooners, creatives on recharge mode and couples drawn to design-led escapism.

The layout gently leads you down towards a postcard-perfect lagoon, flanked by two idyllic beaches. Nothing feels too far or too crowded; this is slow, curated living with a Mauritian soul.

Rooms

The rooms are airy sanctuaries of whitewashed woods, soft linens and natural textures. The palette nods to the island’s shoreline – think sand tones, soft blues and sun-bleached woods. French doors open onto private terraces with sea views that steal attention morning and night. Bathrooms are designed for lingering – with walk-in rainfall showers, and some with deep soaking tubs made for two. The Ocean Junior Suite offers the most spoil-yourself setting for honeymooners: elevated views, secluded outdoor space and that perfect blend of barefoot comfort and stylish detail.

Food and drink

Dining at LUX* Grand Gaube is a joyride through flavour. At INTI, the signature Peruvian restaurant, the pisco sours are perfectly tart, and the churros – light, crisp, dusted in cinnamon – are reason enough to return. The ceviche sings with citrus and heat, while the atmosphere glows with low lighting and Latin warmth.

Bodrum Blue brings the Aegean to Mauritius with a meze-led lunch by the sea. Pale blue accents and shaded terraces create a setting that would be equally perfect for a lazy afternoon or a beachside wedding celebration. The grilled octopus and lamb kofta come highly recommended.

For something more rooted in local culture, Creole Smokehouse, tucked under a canopy of banyan trees, is a soulful, romantic dinner spot. Guests can expect slow-cooked spiced meats, smoky marinades, and a real sense of place.

Don’t miss a pre-dinner session at the Rum Tree House, where mixologist Amadiel – a connoisseur of all things cane-based – leads guests through a tasting of homemade coconut, lychee and passionfruit infusions. It’s quietly one of the hotel’s most special hidden corners.

The story

LUX* Grand Gaube feels deeply connected to its environment without shouting about it. The design is refreshingly original, avoiding island clichés and instead opting for a clean, creative aesthetic. There’s a sense of storytelling here – from the honey produced by the hotel’s own bees, to the local rum knowledge shared with care and pride.

Family-friendly

The resort is cleverly zoned, with adult-only areas and family spots sitting in harmony. For those bringing children, there’s a thoughtful kids’ club and family pool, but honeymooners will barely notice these. The two beaches and varied dining options mean couples can easily carve out their own calm corner.

Spa

While LUX* Grand Gaube’s spa offers a blissful retreat, couples should take a 20-minute transfer to sister resort LUX* Grand Baie for a real contrast. With its red-striped loungers and poolside beats, the resort is reminiscent of Shoreditch House – if Shoreditch swapped city smog for clear island skies. The LUX* Me Spa* is more urban in design – think rich stone, sleek lines and sensorial spaces. The Hydrothermal Bath Journey followed by a 45-minute holistic massage is an indulgent reset, best rounded off with a sunset aperitif at Bisou, the rooftop bar with views across the Indian Ocean.

Eco-friendly

Sustainability here feels purposeful. The Hug Me Honey lunch, where exquisite plates are infused with honey from the resort’s own hives, is a gentle reminder of nature’s presence. The Bee Honest Bar nearby offers another sweet nod to eco-led initiatives without fanfare.

Location

Set on the northern coast of Mauritius, LUX* Grand Gaube is just over an hour’s drive from the airport, but feels a world away. Its secluded setting offers the best of both worlds – peaceful coves for swimming and sailing, and proximity to the markets and culture of Grand Baie for those keen to explore.

Nightly rates start from £315 at LUX* Grand Gaube for a Junior Suite on a half board basis. For more information please visit luxresorts.com.
