Why go?
A storybook unfolding, Cowley Manor Experimental takes you through a journey of old tales and new memories, weaving a romantic tapestry with a nod to Lewis Carroll’s iconic Alice. The Mad Hatter, mid century charm and stately setting makes for a playful, palatial-style minimoon, where you can easily believe ‘as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’
Honeymoon style
A design-led sanctuary for couples after a cool, country escape, Cowley Manor embodies Experimental Group’s knack for mixing haute, fantastical interiors with more casual, modern notions of good living. With scenic welly walks around the grounds, discovering pockets of history and dimly lit rooms where the group’s legendary cocktails are sipped, the hotel is the ultimate setting for a spoiling minimoon escape.
Set the scene
As you approach Cowley Manor, a distinct sense of escaping into a different, more stylish dimension strikes. The grounds surrounding the manor seem to stretch endlessly and the invitation to ‘come with us down the rabbit hole’ begins to make sense once inside. The manor’s old bones have been fleshed out with modern interiors and striking contemporary artworks. A hushed ambiance and subdued lighting mimic that comfort of a private home, while the warm, tobacco-hued walls create a cosy setting, despite the sheer size of the place. The layout could have almost been designed with honeymooners in mind – each room is nestled into its own corner of the house or estate, offering a secluded haven in which to truly unwind.
Rooms
Diamonds, clubs, spades and hearts roll out along the carpets, guiding couples along tall wooden hallways towards the rooms and suites, their doors marked by rabbit head knockers.
Those wanting a particularly special stay should pine for the The Cowley Manor Suite. Occupying the original first floor of the manor, this cavernous suite offers sweeping views of the gardens and lake, with a spacious terrace for romantic, private dinners beneath the stars. Alternatively, the Swan Lake and St. Marie rooms, both even larger in size, provide an indulgent escape for newlyweds, catering to those desiring more understated, yet equally charming interiors. As far as these go, deep coloured walls paint a warm, cosy picture, despite the rooms’ size, (bathrooms are, quite lavishly, as big as the bedrooms). Period features such as fireplaces and original floorboards sit alongside quirky walnut wardrobes, mushroom lamps and red and green lacquers in a clever blend of old and new. Couples will struggle to leave these absurdly comfortable, design-led spaces.
Food and drink
Safe in the hands of renowned British chef, Jackson Boxer, couples can tuck into a menu that artfully reflects the essence of the local area with a delightful nod to French cuisine. As you enter, the dark wood interiors paired with vibrant reds and checkerboard patterns create a fantastical ambiance, enhanced by the juxtaposition of modern furniture like curved bubble tables, against the grand backdrop of the historic room.
At the heart of Experimental Group’s history, the cocktail bar is, as always, a key part of the hotel and invites you for a pre-dinner drink and a nibble, with the must-try Saint Germain Des Prés. The walls, adorned with mismatched art and vibrant clashes, glow with dim lighting, setting a romantic, slightly thrilling atmosphere.
The story
The narrative of Cowley Manor unfolds like the pages of a captivating historical novel. The property passed through the divine hands of the Kings of England, (was finally exchanged by Edward the Confessor for the land in which he built Westminster Abbey) and then was, most notably, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
Spa
The C-Side Spa’s distinctive feature is a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, creating an immersive experience that makes it feel as though you are swimming in an ethereal woodland setting, where a fairy hovering past wouldn’t be farfetched. Paired with the Cotswold stone (used throughout), the overall ambiance is one of true relaxation, enveloping you in the soothing embrace of the natural surroundings and materials.
Minimooners can also look forward to photogenic outdoor and indoor pools (try not to snap the scalloped umbrellas), a fully-equipped gym, relaxation area, steam room, rainfall showers, and a heavenly sauna.
For a post-nuptial honeymoon glow, pamper yourself in one of the spa’s four soothing treatment rooms, featuring a thoughtfully-curated menu of therapies using the acclaimed British-made Monu skincare brand.
Family friendly
Cowley Manor extends its enchantment to families, creating an inviting atmosphere where both parents and children can revel in its spoiling charm. The outdoor and indoor pools both offer specific times dedicated to children. After leisurely strolls through the surrounding picturesque meadows, families can retreat to the games rooms, equipped with pool tables and chess boards, for some heated games over cakes and hot chocolate.
We recommend the Alpaca Rooms for families – a cosy and comfortable space to unwind after a day exploring the grounds. The rooms feature sofas that magically unfold into bunk beds, adding a playful touch to the historic surroundings. From the youngest to the oldest, Cowley Manor (unlike some of the stuffier country country hotels) is designed to offer every family member their own moments of joy and connection.
Location
Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, Cowley Manor’s extensive grounds and wealth of activities right are a mere hop skip away from London (Cheltenham is the nearest station).
The Cotswolds itself is not short of day trips, with postcard-worthy villages, golf courses, and historic castles all within easy reach, adding an extra layer of magic to your stay.
