Why Go?
Experience the magical combination of a Grecian-style, whitewashed villa but set on the Arabian shores of Abu Dhabi. This is Santorini without the crowds.
Honeymoon Style
With only 22 rooms, Anantara Santorini is an intimate beach hideaway that embraces the fly-and-flop mentality. As a sublime adults-only retreat, it provides the perfect sanctuary for honeymooners who seek rest and rejuvenation. No fishing boats or jet skis are permitted in this section of the sea and with no boisterous children to contend with, it’s the epitome of peace – there’s only the sound of rippling waves in the background.
Set The Scene
The European design of the resort fuses seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Arabian Gulf coastline, offering a perfect mix of bright whites and vivid blues. Even after a long flight, couples will feel instantly soothed by the calming white tones of the Grecian architecture. Being able to view the sea from almost every angle lends to the serene effect, allowing couples to sink into the tranquil ambience.
The tone is set before arrival with a personal greeting from the private butler who will ensure any requirements are met. Nothing is too much for this team, they’re the epitome of impeccable hospitality and will accomplish even the most obscure requests. Genuine generosity and warmth is exuded by every team member with Head Butler Nadia bringing the most infectious energy and undeniable charm. Personal touches will be felt from the moment couples set foot in the resort – guests can expect a heartfelt ‘welcome home’ song, sung enthusiastically by the team while they’re handed an orange-scented towel and a deliciously revitalising fruity drink. All this alongside a sun-drenched, picture-perfect vista of white golden sands and shimmering blue sea.
If sandy toes aren’t warranted, the 35-metre infinity pool is the place to bask in the sun and enjoy a freshly squeezed juice (pineapple is gratifyingly refreshing) or a mock/cocktail – and, at such close proximity to the ocean, couples will still feel those beach vibes. Keep those poolside seats for a wonderfully romantic, Sunset Serenity Tea Ritual – arguably at the best time of day. Sip an immune-boosting Greek Mountain Tea, ‘Tsai Tsou Vonou’ (specially imported from Greece and delicate tasting) whilst witnessing the sun dip. Accompanying nibbles include a profusion of dates filled with pistachios and almonds alongside creamy chocolates with oozing caramel or jammy strawberry centres.
Characteristic of a retreat, sunrise yoga is on offer so honeymooners can start the day together mindfully. And for couples wishing for a little more adventure, opt for a morning of kayaking in a glass double kayak helmed by Mounir who will take you to the best spots and point out the passing marine life.
The private cinema is a secret gem, couples can arrange their own personal viewing and snuggle up together on a luxury bed for two under the cosiest blanket.
And in the unlikely event of a pressing email that can’t wait, the business centre is a sight in itself – designed as a World War 2 Cabinet War Room, it’s full of war memorabilia and real artefacts, and well worth a peek for history-loving couples.
Rooms
All rooms have a sea view and the Perissa Sea View Beach Access Rooms are ideal for honeymooners – they have a stunning terrace that allows direct access down to the beach making morning swims feel effortless. The rooms are expansive with high ceilings and cooling, soft-white walls while crisp white sheets dress the bed. Simple yet tasteful interiors in keeping with the aesthetics of a Grecian villa alongside all the expected mod-cons and Amouage toiletries provide a luxurious stay. No baths except in the Suite, but there’s a more- than-ample rain shower. The built-in reading corner is a lovely little extra spot in which to unwind. With a wide range of pillows on offer with appealing names such as Cherry Stone and Buckwheat, it feels like arriving at a sleep retreat. There are also beautifully scented soaps including ginger flower, patchouli and sandalwood – all worth trying.
Every room receives a printed itinerary with suggested activities and times, so no decision-making required. And the pretty blue-and-white complimentary beach bag will come in handy for that book and sun cream.
Food & Drink
In harmony with the theme of the property, two restaurants are on offer – the Arabic Oia Oasis and the Mediterranean Thalassa – both serving vibrant-looking, freshly prepared food. The menus are expansive and cater to all tastes but if there’s nothing that hits the spot, culinary wizard, Head Chef Sinju Varghese, will delight in creating something off-menu, so-much-so that ordering off-menu is actively encouraged. There’s no greater pleasure than turning up for lunch and being treated to the chef’s creation. The salmon tartare on a bed of smashed avocado with a touch of wasabi is a definite highlight alongside the most succulent wagyu beef.
Come morning, the Wellness Breakfast, including signature green detox juice, acai bowl and poached eggs on toast, makes an excellent choice post yoga session.
Foodie couples will delight in booking the Designer Dining for a phenomenal culinary journey. Work together with the chef to create a menu or allow the team to conjure up something unforgettable. A stunning tablescape will be set up on the beach with local flowers for a spectacular, romantic moment. The Arabic menu is nothing short of astounding and features a huge mezze platter with Moroccan specialities including juicy vine leaves and tangy tahini. But it’s the Moorish Specialities that are the crowning glory – the Barkouk tagine with melt-in-your-mouth beef is the ultimate delight.
The Story
A very new addition to the Anantara group, Anantara Santorini only opened its doors in February this year. Previously a privately owned villa, the classical interiors remain relatively untouched and lend themselves perfectly to the resort as it is today. This retreat brings a taste of Greece to the Emirati locals without the need of a long-haul flight.
Family-Friendly
Leave the kids behind, this is a strictly adult-only affair.
Spa
Serenity beckons in the intimate, earth-toned spa. Tucked away in there, you’ll feel cocooned in a retreat within a retreat – the perfect place for seclusion. Indulge in a couples Lava Shell Massage in one of the two treatment rooms. Similar in feel to a hot-stone massage, lava shells are said to contain healing properties and release calcium ions directly to the skin to melt away tension and ease aching muscles – with the added bonus of boosting blood circulation. Guests leave this treatment feeling wonderfully relaxed.
Couples can also pre-book a session to experience the Moroccan hammam together with its Himalayan salt sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool – the door will remain closed for the utmost privacy.
Eco-Friendly
A dedication to sustainability is a part of Anantara Santorini’s ethos with solar-powered outdoor lighting, recycling and no-plastic initiatives. But it’s the 450 date palm trees that are really worth paying attention to – they’re used abundantly in the dishes and as delicious sweet morsels accompanying drinks. The tomatoes and cucumbers in the Greek salad are notably fresh and are organically grown on site alongside other fruits and vegetables.
Location
Anantara Santorini sits on the coastline between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s a 35-minute car journey from Abu Dhabi International Airport and a little over one hour from Dubai international Airport. With direct flights from London, experiencing Santorini all-year-round has never been so easy.
