There are moments in the wedding journey that catch you off guard. Taking my mother to Favourbrook for a dedicated shopping afternoon in search of the perfect mother of the bride outfit turned out to be one of them.
As Beauty and Fashion Editor at The Wedding Edition, I arrived at the St James’s boutique armed with a professional eye. Founded in 1985, Favourbrook has spent four decades becoming one of London’s most trusted names in occasion dressing – beloved for its silk waistcoats and tailored separates, and, increasingly, for its exceptional mother of the bride outfits.

The Collections
Each artisan collection draws on Favourbrook’s distinct heritage: English tailoring married to French embellishment, with fabric sourced from the silk mills of Italy. The result is neither overly fussy nor too minimal but all together more considered. These are unique pieces that photograph beautifully, precisely because they look so good in person, offering exactly what the best mother of the bride outfits should: longevity, elegance, and confidence.

The Space
Favourbrook’s St James’s boutique space encourages you to slow down. To touch the fabrics, hold a sleeve to the light, try a coat you hadn’t considered on the advice of the seasoned team. There are racks of jewel-toned silks and soft pastels, Austrian linens and Como silks, each with a fluidity that you only fully appreciate when you try the garment for yourself.

The Edit
For my mother, the afternoon became an exercise in discovery: sampling silhouettes, experimenting with layering, playing with styling. The result was a shortlist of looks, each embodying the glamour and comfort she wants for the day.
These are the six pieces I’d advise any mother of the bride to take note of:
Carnaby Coat in Ivory Navy Chediston Linen
The Carnaby Coat is a statement without trying too hard. The garment is cut straight, skimming rather than clinging, giving it an elongating effect. The open front keeps it light and graceful, and easy to wear all day. The fabric is a high-quality linen blend, breathable and substantial in equal measure: a natural choice for a spring or summer wedding. The piece is elevated further with velvet appliqué motifs embroidered in a subtle metallic navy yarn, a nod to Favourbrook’s English craftsmanship. This is, without question, an heirloom piece, and for my mother, an instant frontrunner.

Westminster Coat in Navy Silk Organza
Where the Carnaby makes its presence felt, the Westminster works differently – through feather-lightness, transparency and quiet drama. Styled here over a soft blue silk dress, the embroidery on the coat draws out the colour beneath, and, finished with an Atelier Milinary fascinator, the overall effect is effortless. Cut from fine embroidered silk organza, sourced from France, it adds polish and occasion, moving with a beautiful fluidity. For a summer wedding where you may want coverage without a heavy feel, this is the considered choice.

Eton Coat in Orange Ickworth Crease Resist Linen
The Eton Coat is a bold proposition, in a vibrant orange crease-resistant linen, grounded by the discipline of its cut. Styled here as a coordinated set with the matching linen dress beneath, my mother was particularly taken with the tailoring. The Austrian linen is crease-resistant, holding clean lines for the duration of the day, with careful bespoke detail in the embroidery, worked in France to Favourbrook’s unique finish. Long, clean and falling below the knee, it elongates without effort and carries the kind of formality that works first at a summer wedding, and then on to Royal Ascot.

Carnaby Azure Beaufort Silk Satin Coat
The Carnaby in Azure Beaufort silk satin has a regal, hero-piece quality – somewhere between a tailored coat and a long dress, structured and fluid in equal measure. You first notice the silk, a dynamic printed Como weave, which catches the light with each movement. Then the distinctly Favourbrook touches: contrast piping and button detailing, each an artisan nod to their English ateliers. It is also, notably, a coat with a life beyond the wedding day. Dressed down with white linen trousers the morning after, it transitions effortlessly between the demands of the social calendar. My mother wears it here with the Serena Circle Dress in Cornflower Blue, with sophisticated tonal styling.

Oxford Dress Coat in Antique Rose Azalea Silk
A newer silhouette from Favourbrook: the Oxford is structured enough to befit the occasion but soft enough to wear without thinking about it. Cut from pure Italian azalea silk, printed in Como by a family-owned mill, it moves beautifully, photographs like a dream, and feels extraordinarily light for something that looks so considered. With a design versatile enough to carry a summer garden wedding as comfortably as a formal city celebration, this adaptable piece is explicitly flattering – my mother slipped it on and the difference was instant. For mothers of the bride who want shape and polish without restriction, the Oxford makes a compelling case.

Khaki-Bronze Kelmarsh Linen Duster Coat
Of everything we tried, the Duster Coat was my mother’s personal favourite. It’s easy to see why: cut from lightweight Kelmarsh linen with a soft, elegant silhouette and a subtly textured finish, it is knee-length, clean-lined, and elongating. And in khaki-bronze, it’s a more interesting choice than the obvious neutrals. Note the detailing too: elbow-length tulip sleeves with ruffled bell cuffs add a romantic, feminine movement to an otherwise composed shape. The ornate appliqué embroidery – floral trails in shades of pink with green stems and leaves – is bespoke to Favourbrook and executed with expert precision. It’s the kind of piece that reminds you what dressing well, at its best, can feel like.
