Theros takes its name from the ancient Greek word for summer. This adults-only retreat sits in a secluded enclave on Kos, where Hippocrates was born, and where the Mastrominas family have built something rooted in philoxenia, the Greek art of welcoming a guest as one of your own. Here you arrive as a visitor and leave, as they like to say, part of the extended family.
The architecture, designed by Ilias Mastrominas of the award-winning Mastrominas Architecture, draws on the traditional Aegean chora village, with stone walls and rough-hewn timber softened by marble and a neutral palette. There are 88 suites in total, each with its own private outdoor space. Many are shaded by olive trees taken from the family’s own grove, and some come with hot tubs or private pools.
Jasmine and frangipani scent the air throughout the grounds, a nod to the famous gardens of nearby Kos city, while medicinal and aromatic herbs, the same ones Hippocrates once prized for their healing properties, grow among the Mediterranean planting. Two swimming pools, Aesthesis and Euphoria, sit ringed by cypress, olive and lemon trees, and a short stroll away lies one of the island’s protected beaches, where come August the sand daffodils bloom.
Wellness at Theros is inspired by Ef-Zin, the ancient Greek idea of a life lived well and beautifully. At its heart is the first L’Occitane spa in Greece, Ef-Zin Wellness, where signature treatments blend the brand’s natural products with herbs gathered from the hotel’s own gardens and local healing practices. Beyond the treatment menu there are organic tea ceremonies in the relaxation room, daily yoga from a shaded rooftop overlooking the Kos landscape, and a gym that looks out across the kitchen garden. Dining is an ode to Greek cooking, and it begins in the Bostani, the hotel’s flourishing vegetable garden, which supplies the kitchens. MAZI Mas is the elevated fine-dining restaurant, where Executive Chef Alexandros Charalabopoulos and Head Chef Harry Reisis serve seasonal dishes including traditional vegetable briām, kakaviā fish soup, and moussaka layered with local spices and kefalotyri cheese. Over at Parea, named for a gathering of friends, the mood is lively and the plates are made for mezze-style sharing, from octopus salad to katimēra cheese pie and hilopītes pasta. An extensive Greek wine list, thoughtful cocktails and a generous non-alcoholic menu run from morning to night, served poolside or under lantern light. Your prize includes a dinner for two.
