What To Wear To A Wedding: Needle & Thread Wedding Guest Dresses We’re Loving
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Wedding season has officially arrived, and with it comes the delightful yet daunting question: what to wear? With three wedding invitations already landing in my mailbox, I can feel the excitement bubbling and the pressure mounting. Thankfully, when it comes to selecting the perfect attire, Needle & Thread is one of my go-to brands as it caters wonderfully for wedding guests alongside its renowned bridalwear.

I vividly remember the first time I tried on one of their dresses. My sister lent me a stunning piece for a Christmas party a few years ago, and I was immediately enchanted. It was such an easy dress to wear; all I needed was a few carefully chosen accessories, as the dress truly spoke for itself. I remember receiving so many lovely compliments on the night. Since then, Needle & Thread has been one of the first places I look for occasionwear.

Needle & Thread stands out from other brands due to their exquisite attention to detail and signature embellishments. Each dress is a work of art, featuring intricate beadwork, delicate embroidery, and crafted motifs that enhance its aesthetic. By blending modern silhouettes with timeless styles, the brand creates elegant yet versatile pieces that make you feel special on every occasion.

Discover my top picks from the Needle & Thread collection to suit wedding dress codes from classic black tie to breezy destination events.

Black Tie Wedding

When it comes to black-tie events, let’s remember that floor-length gowns are the gold standard. However, don’t let tradition stifle your creativity if you find the perfect knee-length dress – a statement pair of earrings and a gorgeous clutch can easily bring the look back into line with the occasion. Here are three stunning selections:

Freya Georgette Gown, Shell

For a black tie wedding at a city hotel ballroom, I selected the Freya Georgette Gown in Shell. This stunning dress complements the elegant and sophisticated ambiance of the venue, embodying a romantic and refined aesthetic. Crafted from lightweight georgette fabric, it allows for graceful movement, ensuring comfort while maintaining a polished look throughout the evening.

I plan to pair this gown with cream mule heeled sandals or shoes in a similar shade. To complete the ensemble, I’ll accessorise with statement earrings and a simple clutch bag. For my hair, I’ll style it to the side in Old Hollywood waves, adding a touch of glamour to the overall look.

Forget-Me-Not Strapless Gown, Sea Mist/Multi

The Forget-Me-Not Strapless Gown in Sea Mist is a stunning blend of elegance and modernity, making it perfect for black tie weddings and summer celebrations. The soft blue-green hue catches the light beautifully, striking the perfect balance between bold and subtle

Opt for subtle gold or nude heels to elongate the legs without competing with the gown. Strappy sandals or classic pointy-toed pumps would be the perfect combination for a dress like this, combined with a small clutch in metallic gold or a soft neutral. For hair, a romantic updo would perfectly complement the strapless neckline.

Rose Bloom Cape Gown – Sea Mist

The Rose Bloom Cape Gown is a standout choice for a black tie wedding, embodying a blend of refinement, romance, and dramatic elegance. Inspired by soft English florals and classic evening wear, this gown is perfectly suited for a formal setting. The fitted bodice gracefully transitions into a full-length skirt, enhanced by a flowing chiffon cape that adds movement and softness with every step. This gown is ideal for formal celebrations and particularly fitting for a Mother of the Bride or Groom as it makes a statement without being showy.

To style this gown, I would recommend pairing it with elegant accessories that complement its romantic and sophisticated aesthetic. Opt for a delicate pair of pearl or diamond drop earrings to add a touch of sparkle without overpowering the gown.

For footwear, choose strappy heels in a coordinating shade to elongate the legs while maintaining a graceful appearance. A sleek updo would beautifully showcase the flowing chiffon cape. Finally, consider adding subtle makeup with a focus on glowing skin, soft pink lips and cheeks.

Garden Party Wedding

The garden party dress code offers the most freedom to express yourself through colour and print. Bearing in mind the potential for damp lawns, sinking heels, and unpredictable weather, the perfect garden wedding outfit is one that strikes a balance between style and practicality. Floor-grazing dresses can be a risky choice on grass, especially if there’s a chance of a sudden downpour. I recommend opting for midi or ankle-length dresses that will allow you to navigate the terrain with ease.

Lea Ditsy Ankle Gown

The Lea Ditsy Ankle Gown in Powder Lilac/Lemon Sorbet is an excellent choice for a garden party wedding due to its lightweight fabric, which keeps you cool and comfortable, perfect for outdoor celebrations. The ankle-length design offers elegance without the worry of tripping over long hems, making it practical for grassy terrains, while soft floral detailing on the dress complements a country garden atmosphere beautifully.

To maintain comfort while walking on grass, pairing the gown with stylish yet practical options like platform heels or wedges would be ideal. These types of footwear provide stability and support, allowing you to enjoy the festivities without the discomfort often associated with traditional heels.

Sylvia Rose Scoop Neck Ankle Gown, Lemon Sorbet/Pastel

The Sylvia Rose Scoop Neck Ankle Gown in Lemon Sorbet is such a beautiful and feminine occasion piece with the prettiest soft floral detailing. It’s a perfect choice for garden party weddings and summer celebrations. Though elegant and elevated, it still feels light and effortless enough for daytime events outdoors. The flattering scoop neckline beautifully frames the shoulders and elongates the neck, while the ankle length offers a playful, youthful vibe.

This gown would look beautiful styled with tonal pastel accessories – think a soft pink or mint green clutched bag and shoes. For jewellery, I would go for something along the lines of floral earrings and a matching ring. And I would definitely re-wear this delightful gown time and time again.

Wisteria Sequin Ankle Gown

The Wisteria Sequin Ankle Gown in Swan White/Blue is a design I was naturally drawn to as a bride to be, it exudes elegance and glamour in a light-catching design that remains effortlessly chic. This gown truly comes to life as it moves, showcasing delicate trailing wisteria motifs crafted from shimmering sequins inspired by antique floral artwork.

To style this gown, I’d recommend swept-up hair complemented by luminous makeup and delicate jewellery, to allow the stunning embellishment and cape detail to shine. Alternatively, for a modern twist, consider accessorising with silver or powder blue accents.

Destination wedding

Packing for a destination wedding can be a challenge, but with the right strategy, you can maximize style while juggling heat and humidity. Start by choosing lightweight fabrics and relaxed silhouettes that allow air to flow, keeping you cool during those soaring temperatures. Lightweight cardigans or shawls can serve as lifesavers for cool evenings or breezy beach venues, and they should easily fit into your bag without adding bulk. Here are my two top picks for destination wedding guest dresses.

Peony Bloom Georgette Short Sleeve Gown

The Peony Bloom Georgette Short Sleeve Gown in Peppermint beautifully embodies the essence of a destination wedding, seamlessly blending elegance with a relaxed, floaty silhouette. I can picture wearing it at a stunning Italian lakeside, Aperol spritz in hand. Ideal for warm climates, the delicate short sleeves provide just the right amount of coverage against sun exposure and suit chapel dress codes.

I would pair this gown with strappy sandals and a chic mini bag that you can also keep your fan in. For hair, I would do a slick-back ponytail with some gorgeous cluster earrings to bring the look all together.

Summer’s Rose Georgette Cami Gown, Aqua

The Summer’s Rose Georgette Cami Gown in Aqua is perfectly suited for a destination wedding, offering an effortlessly elevated look that resonates with both formal celebrations and casual outdoor settings. Its cami neckline provides a clean and modern silhouette, making it ideal for guests who want to feel polished yet comfortable, especially in warmer climes. The gown’s aqua shade is particularly striking against a tan, or with the sea as backdrop.

As for hair, soft, flowing waves would enhance the relaxed vibe, complimented by minimal accessories for the day time. For an evening event, try some statement earrings paired with a sleek bun. This combination allows the dress to remain the focal point while achieving a sophisticated finish.
